Professor Barbara Maher

Professor, Centre for Environmental Magnetism and Palaeomagnetism

Research Summary

  • Barbara co-directs LEC’s internationally-renowned Centre for Environmental Magnetism & Palaeo-magnetism (http://www.lancs.ac.uk/staff/maherb/). Her major research interests are in Environmental Magnetism and Palaeomagnetism, to retrieve palaeoclimatic, palaeoenvironmental & dating information from the magnetic records of Quaternary terrestrial sediments (soils, loess, tills, lake sediments) & deep-sea sediments. She leads the international Working Group (INQUA ‘DIRTMAP3’) on Dust & Climate. She also applies magnetic methods to current environmental problems, including magnetic monitoring/sourcing of particulate pollutants, tracing of modern fluvial sediment sources, & magnetic 'clean-up' of contaminated waters.
