Further Research Information

My main research field until recently has been the evolution of the landscape, economy and society in early-modern Scotland, ranging from agriculture and rural society to urban development. More recently I have been working on landscape change, and associated socio-economic changes in the upland areas of Northern England, especially the process of parliamentary enclosure. Scotland and northern England from the 16th to the 19th centuries. I am also interested in aspects of the Lake District including the development of its landscapes and modern issues relating to heritage management.
