MA Environmental Management and Consultancy
Whether it is in the board rooms of multinational corporations, the offices of small enterprises or the chambers of government, the environment is now a fundamental part of decision making in every sector of society. Today’s successful private sector or public sector manager needs to understand the commercial opportunities and challenges that the environment offers, the requirements of complex regulations, and the importance of meeting the environmental as well as financial expectations of customers and clients.
The MA in Environmental Management and Consultancy prepares you for these challenges, enabling you to understand and speak the language of both environmental management and environmental science. Core modules in environmental management, environmental auditing and environmental law are delivered by the Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC) and the Lancaster University Management School (LUMS). Students also undertake a work placement in order to develop their skills for future employment in the environment and business sector. Additional knowledge and experience are gained through a research training module, followed by 6 month research placement or a research project conducted under close supervision of a LEC academic. In addition, students are able to tailor their learning by selecting one additional module from the LEC portfolio.

Student Profile
I felt the content of the course could help me both build upon my existing environmental knowledge and bridge the gap between this knowledge and the practical management skills I would need to succeed in business afterwards. The main thing I gained from the course was fortunately just that; an appreciation for, and experience in, the management abilities needed to deal with a range of environmental challenges. I felt the best aspect of the course was the involvement we had with relevant local businesses in the form of the short work placement module and then the longer dissertation research project also in collaboration with a local environmental company. I undertook both of these projects with Apollo Energy, a local utility management consultancy. After developing a relationship with the business over a period of months I was fortunate enough to be offered a role in their new sister company Apollo Enviro – an environmental consultancy.
