Environmental Science via OpenPlus

In partnership with the Open University (OU) we offer a route into our Environmental Science degree courses for applicants who do not currently meet our standard entry requirements.

Under OpenPlus you will engage in 2-3 years of part-time study with the Open University on modules relevant to your planned Lancaster degree. Successful completion of these OU modules will allow you to transfer directly into the second year of our degree courses. You will then have two years of study as a full-time student at Lancaster and graduate with a Lancaster University BSc degree. Students studying Environmental Chemistry with us may opt to study for three years for an MChem degree.

During your part-time study with the Open University you will take modules which provide a firm grounding in scientific principles and practice to prepare you for our degrees. Experimental work and field trips are included during residential courses and provide valuable practical skills to supplement your theory courses and reading. On successful completion of all your OU modules you will have the necessary skills to start our degrees at second year level, and you will complete your degree as a full-time Lancaster University student.

OU module requirements

For Environmental Science BSc and Earth and Environmental Science BSc degrees we require OU modules in scientific theory and practice (S104 and Skills for Practical Science) and in environmental science (S216 and SXE288) - a total of 150 credits taken over three years.

For Environmental Chemistry BSc or MChem degrees we require modules in scientific theory and practice (S104 and Skills for Practical Science) and in chemistry (S205 and SXC288) - a total of 150 credits taken over two years.

In addition, for all our degree courses we ask that students without A-level Maths (at grade C or above) take the OU module Maths for Science (S151) which is worth 10 credits.

Entry Requirements

This route is open to all prospective students who meet the requirements for study at the Open University. Entry to Lancaster is conditional on you passing the OU modules at an appropriate level.

For entry to OpenPlus, you should apply directly to Lancaster University, not to the Open University or UCAS. Please contact us for an application form.
